Both our Year 6 football teams went agonisingly close in the final stages of the Schools Cup last night (Wednesday 10th May).
In a thrilling night, held at Trafford FC in Urmston, the B team narrowly missed out on the trophy, losing the final 1-0 in extra time whilst the A team can feel proud to have reached the semi-finals.
It had all started so differently in front of over 100 supporters. The A team had taken the lead against St Anne's through Reuben Brown but unfortunately could not add to that tally and lost 2-1.
Meanwhile, the B team had to defend for their lives in their semi final match verus Victoria Park (with amazing displays of skill and bravery from goalkeeper, Toby Malkin and centre half rock, Bobby Buckley) but managed to squeeze through thanks to a wonderful strike from Joshua McKenzie in extra time.
The final played out just like the semi final for the B team - but alas in reverse. St Hilda's had all the possession and chances but ultimately lost to a killer goal a minute before a penalty shoot out was set to take place. Congratulations to eventual winners, St Hugh of Lincoln.
We can all be immensely proud of the boys and special thanks must go to coach, Jake Goulden for all his efforts this season. Cup fever swept St Hilda's this week (despite the SATs) and the boys have been great role models for the rest of the school.
