Transition to Secondary School

Welcome to what we hope is straightforward guidance for parents on what to do when it is time for your child to go to secondary school. 

This page is updated with the new dates every May around the time of the Whit holidays.

Entrance exam applications

Online application forms to sit the entrance test for the Trafford Grammar Schools CEM Consortium (Stretford Grammar School, Urmston Grammar, Sale Grammar and Altrincham Grammar School for Girls) are available from Tuesday 2nd May 2017. The closing date for applications is Tuesday 27th June, 2017. 

Please note, to go to Altrincham Grammar School for Boys (AGSB) there is a separate exam. The application deadline for AGSB is Thursday 20th July 2017.

Open Evenings

Open Evenings for the schools where your child would need to sit an entrance exam are usually at the end of June, when they are in Year 5.

Other schools tend to have their Open Evening in September once your child is in Year 6.

Entrance exam test

This year's Trafford Grammar Schools entrance exam takes place on Monday 18th September, 2017. Results for any testing are received by Friday 20th October. AGSB exam is on Saturday 16th September 2017.


The Common Preference Form (CPF) is an application that must be returned to your home Local Education Authority (Trafford or Manchester) by 31st October 2017, putting the schools in order of preference.

National Allocation Day

All children will be informed by their home Local Education Authority which secondary school they have been allocated on 1st March 2018, or on the next working day. 

All acceptances must be received by the school by 15th March.
